Week of 3/1:  Roots Units 9 and 10

February – Poetry month

Objective:  Students will study and learn to write a variety of poetry throughout the month.

Writing:  Monday, Wednesday, & Friday

Modern Poetry (in class):  Tuesday and Thursday

  • Allows 2 nights to write Poem.
  • Week 1:  “I Am” (version 2), Diamonte, Cinquain
  • Week 2:  Object , Japanese, Write a romantic poem about two unlikely lovers (non-people).
  •               i.e.  a tennis shoe and a stapler
  • Week 3:  Winter Break (Assign The Angel Killers)
  • Week 4:  Rhetorical Questions, Pantoum, Sestina

-          American Poetry 1900-present (from Textbook) Tuesdays and Thursdays (in-class).

Poetry Party:  Friday, February 26, 2010 – Unit Poetry Day Project (in conjunction with Mrs. Giles):

1.       Create an original painting that expresses a poem (of personal choice).  You may use oil, watercolor, tempera, ink, or chalk.  Tape a copy of the poem to the back of the painting. 

 

2.       Use slides, photographs, drawings, clip art, or pictures from magazines to represent a poem.  You may create a slide show, complete with background music and an oral reading of the poem.  You could prepare a poster that includes the poem and a meaningful arrangement of pictures.  You could make a collage, carefully arranging both pictures and lines or phrases from the poem.
